What Is Acupuncture And How It Works

Acupuncture is a safe, time-tested medical system used for more than 2,400 years. Very fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body to gently influence your nervous, hormonal, immune, and endocrine systems. This helps your body release natural pain relievers and calming chemicals, while improving circulation and balance.

Worried about the needles? You’re not alone. Most patients feel only a quick pinch or nothing at all, and many find the session surprisingly relaxing. With over 20 years serving the Evansville community, Dr Dickinson and Dr Rehmel include acupuncture as part of a personalized care plan.

Conditions Acupuncture Can Help With

Acupuncture may be a good option if you are dealing with:

  • Muscle spasms, joint pain, or general aches
  • Back and neck pain, headaches, or migraines
  • Swelling and sports or work-related strains
  • Digestive issues or trouble sleeping
  • Frequent illnesses or women’s health concerns

Because acupuncture works with your whole system, improvements often show up in several areas of health at once.

What To Expect During Your Visit

Your first visit usually takes about an hour in a private treatment room. Dr. Dickinson or Dr. Rehmel will listen to your health history and goals, then perform a focused exam. During the session, thin sterile needles are placed and you relax for 30-45 minutes; many patients even drift off to sleep. Your visit may also include gentle massage, moist heat, or cold therapy.
